HAIR THAT
TELLS A STORY
The Mane Event: Audra Wing’s Precision Dry Cutting & Intuitive Layering Technique
The Mane Event is my signature haircut system — a complete philosophy and repeatable technique centered on precision dry cutting and intuitive layering. It creates hair that looks expensive, moves naturally, and grows out beautifully with minimal maintenance.
This approach first gained widespread attention when I used it to create Taylor Frankie Paul’s iconic look for The Bachelorette Season 22. It has since become a requested technique for high-profile clients and everyday salon guests who want modern, wearable hair that performs in real life.

Why This Precision Dry Cutting Technique Is Game-Changing
Traditional haircutting still leans heavily on wet cutting for structure, then a quick dry finish. The problem? Hair behaves completely differently when wet versus dry. Shrinkage, cowlicks, natural fall, and density variations only fully show up once the hair is styled.
The Mane Event flips the script by focusing primarily on dry cutting. You assess and sculpt the hair exactly as the client will wear it every day — eliminating guesswork and delivering predictable, beautiful results.
Key Benefits:
- Soft, intentional texture instead of over-layered looks
- Natural, multi-dimensional movement
- Better length retention
- 6–8 weeks between appointments instead of 4
- Easy styling with minimal product
- Higher client satisfaction and retention
The Core Philosophy
Hair should never look “cut.” It should look shaped — like it grew that way on purpose.
Three guiding principles:
- Dry Assessment First — Read the hair exactly as the client lives with it.
- Intuitive yet Controlled Layering — Build invisible internal planes that release movement without sacrificing weight.
- Texture as Architecture — Use precise techniques to sculpt shape and flow.
Tools That Power The Mane Event Precision Dry Cutting Technique
Every shear was chosen because it supports the dry-focused, intuitive nature of the system:
- HH1 Kamikaze — My hero tool. The wide blade and exaggerated radius excel at smooth slide cutting and channel cutting on dry hair. It glides cleanly without pushing or creating harsh lines, delivering the signature lived-in texture.
- HH6 Kime (including swivel version) — The versatile bridge. Ideal for wet-to-dry transitions, perimeter work, and blending. Excellent balance and reduced wrist strain.
- HH8 Talon — The power player for thicker, coarser, or highly textured hair. Provides clean, decisive cuts while maintaining softness.
- Hanzo Texturizing Shears (Kime Texturizer, Mamba series, etc.) — Precision instruments for controlled weight removal and soft blending on dry hair.
These tools work together as a complete system. The Japanese steel, ergonomics, and blade geometry make the precision and speed possible.
The Step-by-Step Process
Phase 1: Dry Consultation & Assessment I analyze the hair fully dry and styled to observe natural part, growth patterns, cowlicks, density zones, and lifestyle needs. This is the foundation of the entire cut.
Phase 2: Perimeter Establishment Create a soft, face-framing outline — often started dry or lightly damp to respect bone structure and natural fall.
Phase 3: Precision Dry Layering The heart of The Mane Event. I establish two primary layering planes using strategic over-direction, elevation, slide cutting, and channel cutting. This creates soft, invisible layers that produce beautiful movement.
Phase 4: Advanced Texturizing & Blending All performed on dry hair for real-time visual control. I combine point and slide texturizing for blended, expensive-looking texture.
Phase 5: Final Dry Refinement Once the hair is styled, I do a final pass to ensure the cut performs perfectly from blowout to air-dry texture.

Hair that tells a story starts with the right technique and the right tools.
Applying The Mane Event to All Hair Types & Genders
One of the biggest strengths of this precision dry cutting technique is its versatility. The principles adapt beautifully to every hair type, texture, and gender.
Straight Hair — Adds lift and movement through internal slide cutting while preserving density for that “expensive blowout” finish.
Wavy & Curly Hair — Enhances natural patterns by cutting along the curl direction on dry hair. Channel cutting prevents bunching and creates defined, touchable waves.
Tight Coils & Highly Textured Hair — Respects shrinkage and density with minimal elevation and strategic texturizing for better shape and elongation without frizz.
Thick & Coarse Hair — Uses the Talon and Kamikaze for controlled weight removal, creating lightness and flow without over-thinning.
Fine & Thin Hair — Micro slide cuts and careful layering create the illusion of thickness and movement while protecting existing density.
Men’s Haircutting — Highly effective for modern textured crops, bro flows, layered lengths, and faded styles. Dry cutting handles strong male growth patterns and cowlicks, resulting in low-maintenance, piecey texture.
Damaged or Chemically Treated Hair — A gentler approach that focuses on healthy ends and disguises damage while encouraging better growth patterns.
Core Adaptation Rule: Always begin with a thorough dry assessment, then adjust elevation, over-direction, and tool choice based on the hair’s natural behavior.
